captain Mike’s attention we going to ears person no no I’m actually I’m excited about this this is like of everything he’s talked about on the show so far this is I think the first thing that I am actually truly interested in that’s actually one of the reasons as a subscriber I enjoy the show because you paint the Vista you during the use of their we have solution look at that good that’s where about hydroponics Jonathan has been doing aquaponics and hydroponics since since the seventh grade about six years ago so while his peers were playing with LEGOs and weekenders building hydroponic system building a gardens and six years ago and now he’s selling kits he’s doing a lot of work with FFA what’s the smallest scale you’ve done for customer the smallest scale that I’ve done and sold is my deep water culture bucket kits it’s just a recycled five gallon bucket hook an airline to it you’ll see a bit of it when we go in there you’ll see another deep water culture system but the gist of it is I built it as a kit for like classroom applications you could bring it into the classroom set it up with everybody watching and just kind of use it as an educational resource oh yeah I come from an agricultural school so I wanted something that I could use to help my fellow students move to kind of get them into it see we’re going to go take a look at their setup we’re going to see what Jonathan’s been doing and then accountant Mike is going to start grilling Jonathan for some hard numbers so let’s go soft grill you’ve been practicing you’ll be car yeah the magic of editing great all right let’s go okay let’s go guys here we have it we’re going to be headed right into the greenhouse as you can see chicken coop duck goose and then we do have our vertical garden back there oh the jist of hydroponics is the non usage of soil so you’re using the water as a conduit for transferring nutrients directly to the plant okay this results in a double or more growth rate and doubled production in your plants you know lettuce typically that takes anywhere between 60 and 70 days from planting to harvest in a hydroponic system it can take 25 to 30 days that’s really one of the major benefits of it just a quick crop turnover and then also productivity you know I get heads of romaine that’s all out of their system and it’s amazing this is the water culture deep water culture the gist is is that the roots of the plant are being suspended into a body of water covering them in water that’s filled with nutrients for them to of they’ll absorb as much as they can and they just absorb all those nutrients directly create water directly which is why hydroponics works it just you know that direct connection between the nature ants and the plant allows them to grow to cripple escape ntral so you have to do a lot of I guess in some ways kind of like a pool like just maintaining the the correct level of nutrients and whatnot in the water which work does that take normally it’s a little more kind of real here maybe five minutes a day make sure nothing’s dry okay you just got to top it off everyone to make sure that those roots produce it stay fully submerged in water okay you’re going to plant these to a Jonathan yeah so I that would be fun to have Mike do so why don’t you show us that now and then we’ll go over here he’s actually going to plant something today make sure this cameras on we’re catching this yeah it’s ready to go just like that just from there you just plop it into one of those net pots and let’s get any of them yep I can use this one yeah go for it just I’m planting something yeah and yeah yeah but it says easy as that so that’s first time you’ve ever done that yeah I did something this is pretty sure all right it looks okay to you know it’s happy and all right it’s dreams all that yeah all right later we plant another one close everything else will bear it off it’s a very clean process no dirt under the fingernails accountant life like that I do I’m a fan of that okay that one stays up little straighter with that how long do we have to wait till but it going to Erica’s leak among these here our bok choy actual if it’s around wait a long time no these these are very fast as well that’s another green it’s an Asian green we consume a lot here so there are things we counted mike has never planted anything in his life now that he plant and well he is that it 36 plants right there these beds were specially designed to support a family of four or five when it comes to lettuce in particular I know that our household goes through three to four heads of lettuce per week just for sandwiches salads and that kind of thing so I set it up to where if you do rotate the plants out plant three everyday you can get a stream why do you cycle this where like every day you could harvest replant exactly yeah it’s just large enough so that you can accomplish something like that and have a constant stream of produce okay during the winter and lettuce consumption is low and we have it inside underneath bromides yeah so we just plant nine at a clip but what’s nice about the rock wall is you have to play them all today you can actually leave them in there in the tray for another week and they won’t get too lanky yeah but now you will space your burrow out later right yeah yeah and it also gives you time to walk up them shoot pedal the neighbors and stuff to fall behind Centauri that’s what we do with the eggs don’t the more that I can see got chickens he’s so big pays for the feet it’s our first hobby yep that were not upside down oh yeah which was of a miracle I love it good that’s great and you were smart send the kid to sell the egg that’s what I heard yeah they want I could go up for me right haha I’m not interested yeah you guys have found ways to do this with everything from Home Depot set up yourself this at a just to feed your family through the winter through the summer through the whole year I mean that I know what this cost and I know what this cost and I know as oh god if there’s not a whole lot of money there No yeah yeah I mean get a lot of production line you know how much a head of lettuce or much other qualification bucks at the store yeah I’m looking at my car 13 to $90 worth of produce right if that whole bed cost that I’d be amazed yes Jonathan actually has the breakdown the better you will go I’ll go okay I’m interested to see what sort of numbers we can get from these systems if they’re viable if there’s the female you have numbers for me I got some numbers for it all
