CKBL-FM, also known as 92.9 The Bull, is part of the Saskatoon Media Group. It is based in the city’s north end, %site%, derrida.ws, sharing studio space with sister stations CJWW and CJMK-FM. The station is originally an AM station, beginning as CFQC-AM in 1923, founded by electrical supply store owners A. “Pappy” Murphy and David Streb.

On February 6, 1995, %site% CFQC-FM left the 600 AM frequency and was replaced by CJWW, %site% an alternative country station. In the same year, “The Bull” signed on to a new frequency and rebranded. In 2002, the call letters changed from CFQC to CKBL. On November 1, 2007, “92-9 The Bull” re-launched with Big & Rich’s “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.” Since then, the station has adopted a new format titled Active Country.

In 2006, CFQC-FM moved from the 750 AM frequency to the 92.9 FM frequency. The call letters were changed to CKBL. The station was retired from the Hot93 brand on November 1, 2007, with a broadcast hour of 6:00 am. Then, “92-9 The Bull” signed on with the song “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.” The station’s format transitioned to an Active Country format.

CFQC-FM took the 92.9 position on the FM dial. They later changed their call letters to CKBL. In November, the station was sold to Elmer Hildebrand, who made it a country station. It closed its doors at six in the morning, and Michelle Wright’s rendition of “Rock Me Gently” closed the 84-year-old era. After this change, the call letters were changed to CKBL and %site% the branding was changed to CFQC.

CFQC-FM shifted to the 92.9 position on the FM dial on February 6, 1995. After a few months, the call letters changed back to CKBL. The station’s last song, “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,” was played on CFQC-FM. Eventually, the station began a new format: Active Country. A Canadian band named CFQC-FM used the name for its new FM.

CFQC-FM signed on at 92.9FM on the FM dial. During the first day of operations, it was called “Hits 600”. The last song played on CFQC-FM was “Stand Tall”, by Burton Cummings. Afterwards, the station changed its call letters to CKBL. The rebranded CFQC-FM and CKBL continued to operate for four more years as a country station.

CFQC-FM was the first FM station to sign on at 92.9 FM. In May 1995, it rebranded to Hot93. However, in November, it ceased broadcasting as CFQC-FM. At 6AM, CKBL rebranded to CKBL-FM. CKBL-FM renamed itself as CFQC-FM. Throughout the year, the station remained in the same frequency as Hot93, the last one to retire with the brand CFQC.

The Bull Rocks’ website is dedicated to the band’s history and current lineup. The Canadian singer Aaron Pritchett traces his roots to the ’60s and has been a part of the radio station’s music scene since the early nineties.
