Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. Why do women live so longer than men in the present, and why have these advantages gotten bigger over time? There is only limited evidence and the evidence is not sufficient to reach an absolute conclusion. We recognize that biological, behavioral and environmental factors play a role in the fact that women are healthier than men; however, we do not know how significant the impact of each one of these factors is.
In spite of the weight, we know that at least part of the reason women live longer than men in the present but not previously, has to have to do with the fact that certain key non-biological factors have changed. What are these factors that have changed? Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Others are more complex. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.
Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men
The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. We can see that all countries are above the line of parity diagonally. This implies that a baby girl from every country could be expected to live for longer than her older brother.
This chart is interesting in that it shows that while the female advantage is present everywhere, global differences are significant. In Russia, women live for 10 years longer than men. In Bhutan there is a difference of just half a year.

The advantage women had in life expectancy was much lower in rich countries as compared to the present.
Let’s examine how the advantage of women in longevity has changed over time. The following chart shows the male and female life expectancy at birth in the US in the years 1790 until 2014. Two distinct features stand out.
The first is that there is an upward trend. Both genders in America have longer lives than they did 100 years ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.
The gap is growing: Although the advantage of women in life expectancy was quite small, Wiki.r3public.org/index.php?title=User:EdythePapst340 it has increased substantially over time.
If you select the option “Change country by country’ in the chart, confirm that the two points apply to other countries that have available information: Sweden, France and the UK.
