Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What’s the reason why women live longer than men? And how does this benefit increase as time passes? The evidence isn’t conclusive and we’re left with only some solutions. While we are aware that there are biological, psychological as well as environmental factors that play an integral role in women’s longevity more than men, we do not know the extent to which each factor plays a role.

The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. We can see that every country is above the diagonal parity line , this means in all countries the newborn girl is likely to live for longer than a newborn boy.1

This chart is interesting in that it shows that while the female advantage exists in all countries, country-specific differences are huge. In Russia women are 10 years older than men, while in Bhutan the difference is less than half each year.

The advantage for women in life expectancy was much lower in the richer countries as compared to the present.

Let’s see how the female longevity advantage has changed in the course of time. The chart below shows male and female life expectancies at the birth in the US between 1790-2014. Two distinct points stand out.

The first is that there is an upward trend: Men as well as women in the US have a much longer life span longer than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.
