Robert Half’s analysis of 2026 job postings found that 87 percent of roles advertised in the second quarter were fully on-site. Hybrid accounted for 10 percent, and fully remote listings fell to 3 percent. Six months earlier, in the fourth quarter of 2025, on-site roles made up 65 percent of postings.
If you run a small team, that jump probably reads as bad news at first. It is not. The companies with the biggest recruiting budgets just narrowed what they offer, and you did not have to.
The Six Month Swing in Numbers
The shift happened fast. Most of these policies were announced years ago, and 2026 is simply the year the announcements turned into job requirements.

Two other figures fill in the picture. Robert Half found that 36 percent of employers increased the number of days staff must be on-site over the past year. Meanwhile, 46 percent of professionals were already looking for a new role, or planning to, during the second half of 2026.
Put those together and you get a market where the supply of flexible work shrank while the demand for it did not.
Why This Lands Harder Than It Looks
Behind every one of those policy changes is somebody rearranging childcare, a commute, or a move they made in good faith three years ago. People rarely quit over the policy itself. They quit over the feeling that the deal changed without a conversation.
That is the part big employers underestimate, and it is the opening for everyone else. A candidate weighing a rigid mandate against a smaller company with a clear, honest arrangement is not only comparing salaries anymore.
You do not need to promise full remote work to win here. You need to be specific, and you need to keep the promise for longer than two quarters.
