entrepreneurs about drop shipping I’ve owned several different businesses one of my most popular was ranked by Inc magazine as the 144th fastest-growing company here in the US and number eight in our industry we were selling office supplies cleaning supplies and had over 200,000 products on our website now when speaking to a lot of entrepreneurs I see a tremendous amount of beautiful sites that individuals go out and create but here’s the problem they have crickets they have no buyers coming to a site because they didn’t have a marketing strategy in place to actually get customers from wherever that are interested in the niche or products that they’re selling to their sites so it’s so important before anything I always recommend as I stated yesterday try starting off first on eBay and Amazon making sure that you even like drop shipping because this week we spoke about the good about drop shipping and the bad the most common questions I get and how to go about finding suppliers but you need to also make sure that when you create a website that you’re gonna have a marketing strategy in place to drive traffic so let’s go through nine different ways that you can the first and most popular is going to be pay-per-click advertising now pay-per-click advertising through Google which is the most popular if you haven’t done it does a trick to it so you’re gonna need to learn that and learn that fast in the beginning in 2008 I knew nothing about pay-per-click advertising I did it for another business I had but on a very small scale so the first few months I blew through ten twenty thousand dollars that I wasted and learning how to do it efficiently but once I learned how to do it I was spending well over a hundred thousand dollars on Google pay-per-click advertising and we drove a tremendous amount of traffic to our site now here’s the thing you gotta learn how to do it to be efficient I tried using a lot of pay-per-click managers at different firms advertising agencies and none of them could do it as efficiently as we could reason twice and drop shipping you’ll learn Claudette’s go out of stock real fast so you need to stop ads you can’t reach out to an ad agent to make sure that they do it for you so it’s really something when you’re drop shipping I feel that you should be doing in-house the next way that you could go about driving traffic to your drop organic so by 2012 this company had spent a total of forty thousand dollars on marketing what I had probably spent already three hundred thousand plus so we both did around the same amount of business but I spent over five times more on advertising so if you can start off by doing organic early on in your business I highly suggest it you know come up with a whole bunch of topics and start really educating consumers out there do your keyword research the next way that you can drive traffic to your site for a drop shipper is video marketing and like blogging do comparisons do demonstrations of the video do how to assemble the product that they’re about to get the common questions that your customer service team is receiving about those products and if or if you’re doing it yourself and you don’t have a team answer those common questions I’ll tell you video marketing is great I had a couple of videos that ranked number one on the on Google search and it just drove me a tremendous amount of traffic so you’ve got to do video marketing I highly suggest it and if you’re not comfortable and getting in front of the screen like I’m doing right here then just you know do something a video of yours screen and walking people through the product on there there’s a lot of screen capture stuff out there you know I use Camtasia I love it but check that out and I would jump on that the next thing is email marketing now in the beginning you’re not gonna have an email less so what I suggest doing is partnering with somebody that already has a list of people who would be interested in your product but once you start actually getting traffic to your site what you’ll need to do is make sure you’re capturing emails and you know give some type of free offer a giveaway that people would be enticed to sign up for once you have that email address you need to start remarketing to those individuals the next way that I would go about marketing a drop shipping business would be through postcards Direct Mail believe it or not yes Direct Mail actually does work particularly if you’re in the b2b we used postcard mailings we actually designed in-house we did we’ll cheap in the beginning it was kind of actually get out a little one-page brochure that was cluttered with all stuff but the way we folded it in a trifold was a product on the front and we gave it away as a loss leader so he had had a remarkably low price that when people got this in the mail and they saw it they would open it up look through the rest of flyer initially then come to our site they would see our opt-in sign up for our email address possibly buy that product or start looking around our site and buying other stuff once they did that you know they were in our database and now we had a team that I had built where we would cold call individuals and just you know if they’d shopped on our site before we’d say hey thanks for stopping by visiting you know just checking in how’s that product working out for you is there anything else that we could do for for you today if they were you know hasn’t and they said no so how can we earn your business we’ve dug to start doing business with you what we would do is call suppliers a lot of times and try to get you know freebies from them that we could send out to people so that they could try out if it was a disposal product like we sold a lot of rubber gloves paper for offices paper clips what-have-you pens no-cost items but once that people would have to come back and buy in bulk and in bulk soap for bathrooms you know it was very popular for us the next strategy that I would recommend is obviously SEO search engine optimization be careful with this one if you don’t know how to do it yourself reach out to somebody that does try to get educated on it so is that even if you’re working with somebody if you don’t feel like doing it yourself that you’re you’re not scammed because there’s a lot of scams Olivia for instance back in 2010 I was paying a company over $2,000 a month to do work on our site and they had to do on-site optimization meaning they had to come on to my website and be working on it so I paid them the first month paid in the second month third month I’m feeling kind of hesitant I’m like what are these guys doing you know wasn’t seeing any move in the dial which you know with SEO it does take some time and I understand that but what I did is I disabled their passcode just to see if over their next few days that they would contact me the entire month went by I had no contact from these folks and at the end of the month I get a bill from them you know it was just I believe $1,800 and I had a list of everything that they did on my site on site optimization so you know I would say get on the phone with them they were in India and Essen what were you doing on the site and they told me all these different things I said how’d you get on my site because I disabled to a passcode cricket’s obviously they didn’t want to talk about but they continued to try to fill me so be careful with SEO the next popular way is shopping site PriceGrabber shopping comm shops Noah there’s a lot of different shopping sites out there that people go to these sites will actually rank very high in Google and they’re very competitive out there so you can get onto these shop shopping sites you’re gonna pay on typically a cost per click meaning that when you list your product on this shopping site anytime somebody clicks on it comes over to your site that shopping sites going to charge you and some of them might even have some management fees be careful of shopping sites because you know first of all it’s a commodity so people are on those sites sites to try to search for a product so in other words they say I want to buy a printer now they’re looking on Google for if they know the printer they want to buy they go to this tropical shopping site and now they’re really just searching there based on price and then they’ll click through all these different sites find one that’s reputable and end up buying the price buying the product so if that’s the type of customer you want to get and your deal and volume that’s fine but well is that their commodity shop shoppers the next way that I would go about getting customers for your drop shipping site would be through retargeting and what I mean by that is so if you are ranking on Google or already having folks click on your ads and come over to your site 90 plus percent of them I’m telling you this won’t buy a product initially on your site they’re gonna click off go to either another site maybe go to work for the day kids come into the room they have to stop doing what they’re doing they leave your site for whatever reason it’s actually probably close to 98% of individuals so if you haven’t captured their information yet to market to them from an email standpoint what you can do is place some code and what I recommend starting off on a low-cost way is do it through Facebook and what you can do is take the code from Facebook place it on your website and anytime that somebody visits your website and they click off kind of like I’m sure you’ve seen this with Amazon you go to Amazon you’re looking at a product or a book you click off and later on throughout that day you’re seeing in your your news feed that same book that you were just looking at well that’s called retargeting and it’s real simple to do and you can do that for your business and it’s highly effective the last way that I want to share with everybody and probably one of the most effective once your business starts going and getting momentum because work with the existing customers have really federal policy in place for them so that they can refer their friends family other business owners you know cold calling works really well and it’s not even a cocoa it’s a warm call so if somebody’s done business with you already reach out to them ask them how their experience was and really start building that relationship with them in the beginning when I started in 2008 I had owned another business it was difficult for me to do I started doing it at night and just reaching out to a few of our customers and started noticing the next day or week later these folks were coming in and buying from us and then I gave them a referral code that they could give to friends and I started noticing people coming in so I started doing even more throughout today and I started walking away from my other business I’m putting management in place there and started cold calling all throughout today warm calling again and even Co kong-based referrals from these folks and start noticing it grown pretty soon by 2010 I had a sales team that was actually calling out to existing customers and that really catapulted our business and is what I believe got us on ink magazine’s fastest growing companies in 2012 so there’s a lot of different ways that you can market your drop shipping business but just remember this don’t go out and create a beautiful website if you have no strategy in place yet as I stated earlier in the beginning of this week it’s will inexpensive to get into drop shipping and that’s why a lot of folks do it they do it because it’s an easy business to start on a part-time basis but if you don’t have a marketing strategy in place and a lot of these strategies that I went over are either gonna take time or will cost you some initial money pay-per-click advertising shopping sites advertising in them that’s going to cost you money retargeting through Facebook but that’s really all necessary to have a successful business you can’t store a drop shipping business and not have a marketing strategy or place in particular you can’t not have a budget in place you’re gonna have to put some money into it some skin in the game and I’m telling you if you do all this and you’ve got a good product that you’ve got good margins in it you’ll be okay
