Next time you ask yourself, how can I make some money? the correct answer should be: Monetize Everything!
What does it mean to monetize something? well the dictionary defines monetize as a way to earn revenue from (an asset, business, etc.). Let’s just add ‘skills’ to that.
I think most of us get stuck in the rat race or the corporate illusion of the American dream. We’ve been trained to think that we can only generate income through just one source; that is the job, whatever yours is. But more than likely you have several other options available to you, and you can start today by changing your mindset to ‘monetizing everything’
How Do You Monetize Your Skills?
The first thing to do is to make a note of what skills you actually have. So get a blank sheet of paper and a pen, and start writing down all the skills you possess. To be more organized, draw a straight line down through the page to divide into two sides. Name one side SKILLS and the other MONETIZE. You’ll be surprise how many things you’ve learned to do over the years that has completely went dormant. Or perhaps you thought non of those skills were in demand. Let’s write them down.
After you’ve written down your skills, then start thinking of ways to monetize them. If you’re the handy type that get things fixed around the house, well there’s a demand for that. You know how to drive? well consider driving for Lyft or Uber. Or perhaps you’re a gym rat in very nice shape or you just love taking photographs. You can sort out modeling, may be become a personal trainer or start selling your photographs online. I have also seen a rise in social modeling on instagram; people build a big following just posting pictures of themselves or the places they visit and before you know it, they’re getting big sponsorship deals.
These are just suggestions. Below is a sample of my skills notes from two years ago, to give you an idea.
Once you’ve done this exercise. You want to go through your list, do some research on multiple ways to monetize each skill, then based on your current time and schedule narrow your skills down to 1-3. With a shortened list, you are confident that you will have enough time to dedicate to exploring each one for monetization. The next and probably the hardest step is to take action and execute. Don’t get complacent now. You’ve done the first two steps, now get out there, whether that be online or in the real world and start seeking opportunities that will pay you for what you have to offer.
