okay ready welcome to another episode of around the block talk I’m your host Lowe’s and today I get the honor of interviewing an extraordinary entrepreneur here in Denver Colorado today we are interviewing Katherine Johnson of cars for you Katherine welcome so hey good morning how are you I’m doing great I’m doing even better now that I have you on the show well thank you so I’m looking forward to today’s episode you’re going to be breaking down some wonderful knowledge about what to look for when you’re buying the right website before we get started tell the audience a little bit about you and your business and what you do at cars course I’m the owner of cars per year it’s a small independent automobile dealership and what we do is we help clients find whatever vehicle is a it can be a new vehicle it could be a vehicle more recent and really we do best that we can to find the best vehicle for the client for the best price I love it well I think that leads us to you started your business you knew that you wanted to offer the concierge service this really premier service but you also knew that you needed to be online and you ended up buying a website a very beautiful website by the way and that is what you’re going to talk to us today about is what to know when you are buying the right website right and you’re going to help us understand and avoid some of the pitfalls and look at some of the things that we really should be focusing on so let’s talk about that a little bit you have a beautiful website what is it what is it about your website that you absolutely love I love the design of it I love that it doesn’t look like a lot of car dealer websites and oppression you need to look to it so you really love the fact that you got this website it looks good and it works good why why did you get website posers relegated to really create credibility in the business for the business and also amongst other auto vessels but that’s one of the first things that people got is website and I literally have had people pay I look to your website because they wanted to make sure your legitimate business did they get tough stuff and again I just built that brand awareness and that facility with your clients it wasn’t so we at the very beginning was it is you try to get a website done but then you have Commission’s tell us about that well that was really about the need to get with somebody who understood the vision of the company and that really was able to deliver the product that we were looking for we didn’t have to have a whole lot of back-and-forth because he really understood it right from the very beginning and he had that same quality level that same aesthetic that we were really looking for and unfortunately the first design I really couldn’t latch onto that and really couldn’t understand at the same way that we wanted to see it so that was really a big learning on my part for sure was really understanding hey you know it can’t just be about the price have certainly be about this is your brand and you want to make sure that you know with something that is so precious to you you spend so much time of your time and developing that you know the website really has to reflect about you who you are Randall about and and a lot of people have the concept that if I go strictly on price I’ll be able to get what I mean for my business and really over and over and over again we run into it all the time that people try to take you know they cut corners try to save money when in reality they should be more focused on the design what is the look it is the content that I’m getting really represent for my brand especially if you’re a high quality brand like your computer’s you know you can’t you can’t dirty it up or muddy up the name with bad branding if you’re going to say give me top dollar for my service because I’m going to get you great cars when you look like hell you know what I mean we don’t we don’t look bad today we look really good today right what would people think if we were looking like we were homeless when we were trying to sell a $90,000 car and that’s what your website had to do it had to really portray a high quality branding and style that your company is all about and that’s what I think a lot of people tend to don’t go cheap guys don’t spend the money don’t try to save money so you can get content because you’re only going to spend money again if you really want to do it right exact an investment in your future for your brand so true because again that’s where you build the brass it really resonates with the clients they always will be checking about so they can trust that you’re a legitimate business and making really understand who you are and it really should reflect the quality of your brand whatever that happens to be definitely now tell us a little bit about you know you focus a lot on the right brand you folks on the right website but where would you be if you didn’t do that if you had gotten the run-of-the-mill $300 website that had a janky plugin through but they don’t you won’t be going on well I don’t think we would still be in business to be honest yeah I mean I think it’s one of those things where it is so critical to your business especially in automotive tells where the average person spends 14 hours online research vehicles make your dealerships and so forth so they could feel good about what they’re buying and providers if you don’t have a good incredible website and you’re not going to be able to to get that you’re not going to be able to establish a track so listen we’ve already started talking about what to look for one we talked about finding the right designer right that was very important you also talked about what to look for in a designer you knew that you needed a good design but how did you know you were going to find the right designer like what were the key indicators when you were shopping for that second device like what really made such a difference is our designer understood immediately what it was we needed he started working on the logo fine-tuning that and really creating the first concept of what our tagline is your new driving experiences our tagline and and really kind of again fine-tuning of that logo but she was able to communicate quickly and he was right on site right away you know what we needed and he also had some really good references for me for example how we needed to get a copyright really I thought I was a good writer and I have been as a writer and I dirty and I wasn’t really understanding that I was able to write into the key to talk about what we were going to do now but with all the needs of the client so it was really important to get that to do refer all what you need to you know really take my ideas in terms of content for the website send it to somebody and she was able to polish it and to frame it in a way that really made much more clearer points for so anyway no matter how good of a writer you think you are trust me you need help see always get the right help always get the professional you know you know you don’t try to operate on your leg yourself so don’t try it you know do your own design don’t try and do your own writing don’t try and do your own photography major selfie needs a really good that’s a very good point you need to go and find the right professional to do the right job when was the last time you went and looked at as YouTube video and you try to overhaul the engineer car you just don’t do that you go to a professional self and in all other instances when especially when it comes to your business invest in having a professional help you and that is the next point about what to look for is the right messaging right how did you know you were getting on to the right messaging I mean you they sent you that content how do you know that you need to message mine that’s important I think once I started to know I would send over ideas and the major point to both the designer as well as the writer and we would all three of us really go back and forth with what which it sound like are we delivering the right message how does it fit onto the screen because obviously the designer need a certain number of words and so forth because that’s the thing two people really don’t understand that that TNI you do I don’t know how to say you know I can count working through that kinda yeah yeah but you bring it into the actual design process and how much space do I have it’s kind of like it’s kind of like trying to do branding on Twitter right you only got 140 characters right you got to be very specific right and that’s where having the right professional with your messaging was so critical because yes you know what happens if you don’t give the right up that’s right you know right exactly and it’s really again the collaboration between the three people so you know the owner of the company the designer and then also of course you know the writer so that we can get get it framed sitting on the page correctly working with the design correctly and then the words being the right shape implies that make sense no I totally makes sense because when you’re creating a presentation a sign on a building a website you have limited real estate and you have to make sure that the messaging gets short and sweet and powerful and you don’t take up and need another building for the science alright it’s definitely very key now let’s talk about the next thing that you we need to look for functionality why was that so important well it’s important for a car dealership because you know we have to be able to post vehicles ourselves and we need to be able to put pictures and we need to put in context how the vehicle features benefits meant and so forth and in order to do that I have to be able to do it myself I need to be able to and I’m not an article writer and I know how to do all that not into the inner workings of the website so I worked with our designer on that works you and you know we worked on some different ways to solve that problem and then we ended up working on getting a plugin that really helps a lot very user friendly but again working with a designer they can find solutions to your problems like that is really important and he didn’t stop until we had an exactly right though and that’s key functionality is one of two three major things that you are looking for on your website one is the design two is the messaging and three is the functionality if you’re a car dealership do you have the cars in a way that people can peruse them look at the price in the detail do you have a restaurant do you have that menus that people can look up and see if their size is if there’s option do you own a clothing store and an online clothing service you need to have that website with the functionality of being able to have those zoom photos being able to have collection of sizes and colors you know it’s really important to have that also functionality like being able to share it on social media right people are going to say hey I just bought my my $90,000 Porsche with Kathryn I love cars for you what are they going to do they’re going to want to shout you out do you mean that functionality so people can share you on in fact I super Krete well and we created forms everything from trading forms and we could do valuations on people’s trade things like we also financing so we have a credit application all those kinds of games and you don’t really think of those from the very beginning but you know and also a form where you can create your vehicles there use the vehicle of your dreams I like that that’s like a little wish list yeah exactly I love that you want to see what do you need people we’re gonna get it for you now I need to put my wish list on yes hahaha so let’s move on to now that that you picked your site you you found your designer you got your content you built it have the functionality what about when it’s darker now you need to actually get into how important is training when finding a designer or web developer how much is training how important is that to have that part of the package when you’re you know contracting a web developer you really do need to have training you need to know how to sell help throughout the life of your website you need to know how to work with functionality yourself and then one thing I discovered to Lowe’s which I didn’t really anticipate in the what I really needed to go back and revisit it because as you the business was growing things shifted a little bit again we’ve changed some of the business processes we changed some of the things that were important so we needed to really go back to Nicola and have him really put some more things in there and add a little bit more content we are car service concierge if you really wanted to speak more to that yes we have inventory yes we have all those things but we really wanted to make sure again that what seems and comes out the most strongly is the service piece yeah definitely and that’s a very good point because like all of us were constantly growing evolving changing and so our business right now if you’re a restaurant you might go ten years and then you remodel your restaurant right or your storefront and in this case your website don’t think that it’s like a one-time said and done it’s up there we’re good to go because if you’re changing if you’re changing your prices if you’re adding new services if you’re maybe expanding you got locations you need to make sure that you revisit the website on a regular basis because you’re going to have to make sure that it rose along with you right that’s true and I really didn’t anticipate that part I really was out of the mindset that okay the inventory is going to change but we got this done check it off the list and I realized really be honest every quarter it’s really important to go back in there to look at it yourself with a critical eye and really key because the functionalities still serve my diverse needs through that does the contest don’t reflect the direction that I’m going to this still looks like the emphasis and the important pieces of marketing business yeah very critical make sure you always review your site and my Catherine said every three months is a really good time to sit down sit down with your team really ask those questions how is my business changed over these last three months have we been doing something different that we’re not telling the world about make sure that your site reflects that very good point so you got the website you’ve got train you may be gone back and revisited and updated it yeah what benefits have you seen from you know people checking out your site it being online doing business with it what are some of the benefits that you had I know that people are viewing your services online how else has that benefit of your business well it benefits the business because people like to go to the amount of page they like to read about into this Katherine Johnson my trust remedy the people on the team and why should I trust them so you know it allows people to really feel like they can connect with you vidual yeah there is pretty nice on me about about us but then it also has benefited because we get sales from it you know I had a client that was flying a high-end vehicle and he didn’t commit to the website so you want to make sure that we were legit so again it’s that prospector if the legitimacy of the business and for me because I’ve got inventory online its sales we just look scriptures and we look at baby Turner’s and equipment click on a car and yeah that’s what everything that’s true and it always does increase your sales because it as it grows your market share because you piqued interest right your website let’s if you didn’t have your website people wouldn’t be able to see the cars they wouldn’t be able to understand what you are offering so then it really you know the biggest benefit is that once they do that it inhibits them it encourages them to buy from you know and every business that has a good website that has the functionality that has the right messaging makes money from their website would you say that you’ve gotten your money back on your website investors absolutely yes I have gotten back and I’m going to continue to get it back because we’re going to continue to grow and evolve company and the website’s going to continue to grow and evolve as well as it needs to so it’s been fantastic and I know that my designers always on call away he always makes this business a priority and I know he’s got several accounts and other too many works with but again that sort of that relationship that is so critical between you on your designer uniquely to pick up the phone and even though you may be a smaller account because you know worse we’re still in the early stages with the business we where we are some of the big accounts that he also manages but he makes me feel like I am a big accountant and that I matter that’s about matters and that goes back to relationships and I think at the end of the day when you get a website when you create video content when you play sad but end result is so that you can make contact with people and build that relationship right because at the end of day doesn’t matter what you have is once you get them in front of you how well can you build that religion and I think that’s what their website and really helped you to bring those people so then you can build that relationship so true because again people forget a lot of things but they don’t forget your experiences they don’t forget so hopefully you know 50 do your job well if we do our job well people are going to feel like wow I’m going to recommend my friends and family to go and trust Catherine curse for you she doesn’t see you know that to me yes that is the very best and that’s really winning that’s the goal that that’s the gold medal you know if you’re to win a medal that’s what you’re trying to shoot for is where everybody’s happy to win win and everything that you use all your arsenal may that win possible right try me and that’s what knowing you know what to know when buying the right website is so pretty beautiful regard to that part you know because now people have gone away from that you know local coupon book a website right to social media to video content and that’s where we’re at in today’s world is really need to ahead and review really quick with our viewers what we talked about we talked about today is we talked about what to know when you’re buying the right website and there are some key factors of finding the right designer all right knowing who you know I found it very critical knowing what to look for in a designer you know that they have references that they have a portfolio yeah but then if you need other services like the writer that they could refer and that’s what made you feel very confident yeah any-any always referred to find quality people and I want to add to that it really is the designer and the company that they’re representing and is there ever been a year company out there so really don’t make the dollar don’t make doubt the most important piece who you guys really want to make sure that you’re working so maybe trust the trust with your brand and the world investors very true and that leads to the next point of messaging make sure that you have the right messaging right don’t just look for the pretty shiny thing make sure that it reads well that it has your point across it motivates people something right right now that’s what you did with your site another key component another key component is functionality yes we don’t just want a digital PowerPoint presentation online we actually want a working functioning website that can do little tricks and things that get you more business right right the engages your client and making you interested in what you’re offering yes very much you need to be able to have that functionality and at the end though you need to be able to learn and know how to use that functionality through training which is another key component for what you’re buying to the right website yes absolutely does you need to be able to work with your own website you own it it’s yours so now you don’t know how to make it work like driving a car right yeah you can know what each button is and change the oil make sure you get new tires on there yes you need to make sure that you constantly are are connected to it and then you’re updating it to know how to use it but then also revisit it right now we visit your website every three months critical just so you stay fresh and really big benefit from that is the big benefit from that is that remains you remain relevant with what you’re doing to change your business and you can continue to compare with other people that are in your sector so that you can make sure that no one is getting ahead of you in a message very true very true so we visit your website so there you go
