Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What’s the reason women have a longer life span than men? And why has this advantage gotten larger in the past? The evidence is limited and we have only partial answers. Although we know that there are biological, psychological, and environmental factors which play a significant role in women living longer than males, we aren’t sure the extent to which each factor plays a role.

It is interesting to note that, while the advantage for women is present everywhere, cross-country differences are large. In Russia, women live for 10 years longer than males. In Bhutan the difference is less than half a calendar year.

In countries with high incomes, the advantage of women in longevity was not as great.

Let’s examine how the female longevity advantage has changed over time. The chart below shows male and female life expectancies at the time of birth in the US in the years 1790 to 2014. Two areas stand out.

The first is that there is an upward trend. Men as well as women in the US are living much, much longer than they did 100 years ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

The gap is getting wider: Although the female advantage in terms of life expectancy was quite small however, it has grown significantly over time.
