there here we are with John Chow thanks so much for being here today John how’s everything going with you I’m going good how are you excellent everything’s great so before we get started why not you give us a quick 30 second elevator pitch of what you did all right basically I run John shell calm that is a blog that talks about the digital lifestyle how to leverage the internet so you can live a lifestyle where you have time freedom money freedom and location freedom the system makes the money so you don’t have to six figures a month sometimes even more so why don’t you tell us how that transition actually happened well you’re right I started as a blogger just cleaning up getting friends and family so what’s happening in in my life at John Chow calm and along the way one of the things I talk about on my blog was how I made income of my main site which are technology content site that uses advertising to create the income and it was those blog posts that actually got my build up my readership and so eventually I had to blog got bigger people asking me how do you make money with a blog and and so what I do is I did a case study to show that you can monetize a blog and i monetize my blog from zero to forty thousand dollars a month from in two years and how I became an affiliate was well when I first started my peasant blood the monetize it the way we had a blogger monetize it and that’s what sir just Google Ads and advertising advertising very common business model but as more and more competition started coming in and the amount of inventory ad inventory started increasing I find that my Agra started going down my income wasn’t going up by the same and the similar was my traffic because of the low ad rate and the amount of inventory and not all demons only being sold so I started looking at other ways of making money and that’s how I discovered Philly marketing and it’s almost kind of by accident what I noticed when I was looking at those Google ads and I first obvious part that was just the advertisers like Amazon but actually buying the ads but then I say examine it closely I found it wasn’t really Amazon I was actually finding yet it was an affiliate of Amazon that was by the air to this in the Amazon and so the affiliate was basically paying me a low enough rate that even though he’s his Commissioner Amazon is just greater than what he pays me so that’s when I discovered wait a minute you know to be to him that what I just cut him out I’ll become the affiliate myself I said so set up having the ads but I fully put Amazon on my on my on my site I became a Phillippe with Amazon directly on my site and I found out my income something’s just double and as we went along the way I just got I discover that a couple question is like well you know my advertiser who’s paying me X amount or whatever he always had to make money doing the to match a big money doing this otherwise he wouldn’t pay me so then I start looking at what my advertisers were selling and I saw I realized that some of their product that you know I could do this I could quit the same product so suddenly he said because I was that I was you know long the advertiser to sell parts on my on my blog I became the other type so to speak and I started selling my own product so it was a it was a progression we started out by saying I make money by selling advertising I make this much and then by become affiliate that much become but then back um actually the product later it became the most amount so it’s just uh and so now today I basically I push my own product I sell high-end product and I and so the my traffic hasn’t gone up that much greater than what used to be the seeker was instead of making like when I was just running Google Ads I get pay one kind for one click and then the person who clicked it end up as yeah booth has this customer and I never see that person again now now the business model is I try to capture the click for myself and then I try to sell them my product and additional products this where I keep the customer and that so instead of making 25 cents when a reader clicks on my blogs and they never seen that video again I now come potential to make thousands of dollars I’ve got the same reader and that’s where the real money is basically increasing the amount of money you make for each reader rather than just trying to make a quick 25 cents or a reader so many people are going through the process of creating a blog and thinking if they just put content out there that you’re gonna start making money why do you think your blog has been so successful when so many others continue to see failure yeah I think the probably the main reason for that is a lot of new bloggers they get into the business because beginning for the wrong reason they see they see you they see me they see other bloggers making good money at this so they are getting into I want to make money so I’m gonna start a blog just like Zak and just like John and just like just like oh those are other professional bloggers and they wanted to do is just that all you have to do is just create content and then money will come flooding in it’s like that that movie Field of Dreams you know it when a baseball player if you build it they will come okay well that that can suddenly works in a movie so yeah and so I think the one reason that I’m successful at this is because I a I’m not really a blogger so to speak I’m an internet marketers who happens to blog so and too many people are bloggers but they don’t understand that you know just creating content not enough you gotta build a marketing contest was I guess it’s just a two part formula you can create other content and there’s lots of there are lots of people who who are way better way tonight than I am who they create much much better content but you don’t get the traffic simply because they’re they’re writers and then actually not the marketers I mean writing it it’s a first part of formula you got promote it and I spend like half my time actually I spent a lifetime creating content that I spent promoting my content so that I think that’s the biggest reason and the second reason is that I feel that a lot of a lot of bloggers getting choosing they choose a topic that they’re not passionate about they choose it because it’s the money-making topic this is what I can make money well this is the high paying niche so that’s not gonna blog about but they have no they really then an authority that we don’t know much about it and they’re not passionate about it and this is a long-term a long-term venture it’s not a overnight get-rich-quick kind of thing and it said first eight months my blogs life I zero there was no money in it like somebody I was doing like two blog posts every single day and if you’re not passionate about it you’re not interested in that kind of topic you’re not gonna be to stick around that long making no money so why most bloggers fail they pick a topic they’re not passionate about and as a result they can’t keep it up long enough to build a leadership base that was sustained to business and but I mean that’s the whole sort of talk to reason I believe you actually may be more money than ever before and for a while your site was actually banned from search engines yes and you weren’t even getting a lot of traffic so why are you talking about how you’ve been able to withstand and actually adapt with the times how you now do social media and a mailing list and gain new audiences all the time without relying on just I see yeah yeah a lot of people notice but many years ago I was bang I was moved from Google’s search results like I did as part of my marketing you know I was experimenting with various things some of them were pretty much on the edge of their black hat basically and I was a good aside to punish me by removing me from their entire search engine so when you’re supposed to John Chow you you got she got John cow me so I was I was not to be seen anywhere so a lot people thought that it was over for me about Google traffic I’ll never be unable to survive this and the reason I did survive mostly was because what we talked before about keeping a customer for ourselves building our own building my own list and that was the reason I survived it I started a list getting pure opt-in to my site so instead of having someone come to my blog and have them click an ad and leave I never seen him again when they come to my blog I asked them to subscribe I asked him to like me on Facebook okay like a pyramid Twitter I saw some some way I could contact him again and my biggest thing was I hate subscribe to my email list and get updates and if you do here’s a free ebook I give him a sensitive to subscribe so I build up this list of customer so when Google did nuke me instead of having no more traffic I had this list of customers that I have a list of leaders that I can actually contact and keep in touch with and that’s how I was able to grow and that’s how I was able to stay my income until Google let me back in the good graces and coming back on a list so uh if there’s anyone even one mistake actually I think I made when I first started was I did not start my email list from day one because youngchul calm was a personal blog and it wasn’t designed to make any make any money I did it’s not the list until like almost a year down the road and if I had I started from day one you know today the list would be twice the size it is and conversely my income would be would be twice as big so if for any blog or any internet marketer out there basically a stylist from day one is my number one advice and was the same time style blog stop the list and start capturing those email and do not monetize your blog in the beginning I always find that’s kind of counterintuitive at first Sigma is my blog life I made zero but because I wasn’t trying to monetize I just want to do the readership base when you’re first starting out you just want to build a readership and we look at it when you’re putting advertising on your website it’s kind of kind of productive because we’re spending all this time and Efrain or is marketing trying to get people to come to your site and then you have this ad screaming click me click me click me and when you click it they leave your site alright so you want them to stay on your site you want them to subscribe to your site and you want them to engage them so don’t put don’t try to monetize your site from the beginning just capture the lead you want a month you want to not just going to get go monetize it on the back end like once you capture lead you you create an email funnel an email autoresponder you can email them and you can monetize the follow-up you can say hey I recommend this but the new video is coming about that you already capture that person and therefore you don’t it’s ok be clicks or something cuz you have another way to contact them again but I’m actually thinking about removing all advertising for my blog now yeah because I find that these days the ads on my blog and that’s what most people see they think that’s where the money comes from but the energy cancel right now less than 10% of the top logs total income and I’m trying to run an experiment what would happen that how much of my personal income increasing why we moved that 10% the ad that’s sending to others other advertisers yeah yeah that’s that’s not a good point because I feel that a blog or a website or anything cut into them misadventure it’s not a static thing you always got because the experimenting with and trying out new things like if you look at the way I started when the way I’m on tied to where monetize now at least it’s a 180 ship and the same thing wouldn’t work to blow went into black then when a blog first started was on a free wordpress theme and today it’s like it’s custom-made and everything so you know don’t think of it as like just want to lose it we should build it will come no if you build it yeah you get continually building in a continued ability to adapt good new things will come down the pipe are you gonna make change and adapt to those changes before we go you have any parting words of advice there are people that want to make money with a blog or kind of getting discouraged at the moment yeah I don’t know one thing and that that that is a lot of people you know they have is n go with mine they say you know like it’s a journey I want to get to the end cuz the end is where the rainbow is the N is doing the pot of gold is right there and I’m gonna tell you that when you finally get there you’re gonna discover that it wasn’t the pot of gold in a rainbow that was the thing that’s really the value it was actually your journey along the way to the pot of gold I didn’t a rainbow so on your on your road to dot-com success I like to remind you to basically take time and
