CES is a great time to learn about new tech but if you can't be there then you have to rely on your favorite tech blogs to find you the good stuff or you could just use product hunt or steam hunt to find cool products yourself but which one is right for you well let's find out in this product hunt versus steam hunt review okay so if you want all the CES news normally go to a popular tech blog and find some cool stuff so I came across this cute little programmable robot called misty – so naturally a winter product hunt and tried to find a little bit more information about it but when I typed it in nothing came back so to my surprise it wasn't a product hunt at all but fortunately I've discovered another product hunt alternative called steam hunt and when I actually typed it in here I was surprised that it appeared I was even more surprised find this was actually listed over seven months ago so that got me thinking how good is Steam hunt and how does it compare to product hunt so let's find out okay so the front page for a product hunt is a fairly playing I'm not sure if it was designed specifically for a mobile phone but it is fairly plain now as you can see we've got the upcoming products here then we can see what was added yesterday there's a cute little gif image here and we can see that we can just up vote this product if we actually like it now you can go ahead and make some comments as well so this will take us into the main page and we can see a little bit more information about this particular product however that said the content is are pretty limited sure there's a few nice pictures but it really doesn't tell us too much about the product listen we can go and find clean mark on Steam hunt and there it is so steam hunts a little bit different we've got on the left hand side we've actually got the full display and on the right hand side it displays the results that have been returned so we're just going to go through and have a look at this detail again it's got some cute images at the top there's a little bit more information here and it's got an upvote button here as well and of course you can share socially now there's also tags here so you can click on those and just jump to products in the same category but the other thing I noticed on product hunt was there was a link to some social media references so it's links to actual reviews perhaps on blog and even medium in this case now apart from doing the up vote you could also let the maker know if you would recommend this product to a friend and if you want to make some comments well you go down to the discussion section and make a comment and maybe the maker may even reply Steam hunt has a comment section too and curiously there's actually a dollar value against this now this is one of the points of difference of Steam hunt it's built on the Steam blockchain and your vote actually is more than just the vote it's actually a up vote of a monetary amount now I can't upload here because I don't actually have a login so let's go through the login process for both product hunt and Steam hunt ok so if you want to sign up to product hunt you just hit the sign up button and then you log in with one of your social media accounts we're just like even with Google now you get through the process of adding your personal information so you add a little bio and you give them a location and you just confirm your 16 years or older we hit next and then we have to select our role now we go through this whole process it's actually quite detailed and I don't know if I want to share this much information with the world but we'll just go ahead and we'll just add some more things in here and see how that goes so now it gives us little bio about how it works so let's just continue so that is the signup process it's a fairly easy but they're asking for quite a bit of information for your profile I don't know if I'm that comfortable with that and that's great for them but I really just wanted to hit the upload button and support a product that I like now will contrast that to steam hunt and if we just go ahead and hit the sign-up button here we can see that signing up for Steam hunt enables you to use your account on all Steam d apps now a Dee app is a distributed app on the Steam blockchain so there's currently over 400 based apps that this one account will allow you to access so go ahead and create an account and we just hit continue now it asks for a phone number because they want to validate that you're a real person they are effectively giving away free money after all normally we'd go ahead and put a phone number and get an SMS message back and the account will be created now it's not instantaneous like product hunt but you will get an account created so I'm just going to log into an account that I've already created just so we can continue on with this review okay so the next part of the review is actually adding a product let's say that you love some of these products and you want to go ahead and add one that you've found so you go ahead to a post product now this is where it gets a bit interesting because if you haven't posted a product on producthunt you have to jump through a few hoops before you can to actually post a product you have to add a headline to your profile you need to upload three days in a row subscribe to the daily digest and upload eleven products if we contrast that to Steam hunt once your accounts created you're ready to go and your privacy is protected okay so that was just to prove a point I already have a registered account with product hunts so if we now hit post a product we can go ahead and add some details now I'm gonna go ahead and grab a product from a Steam hunt so the cup it's not already on a product hunt so let's go ahead and continue there now it's requiring a name a tagline you have the link already you add a topic and whether it's available now or pre-launch and you can also schedule your launch of a particular product let's just go add some details and then we go ahead and hit next but I think you get the idea there is quite a bit of work to be done to post a product on a product hunt let's contrast that to Steam hunt if we wanted to add a product we go up here and hit the plus button now we just need to enter a few basic details we put the product link in here the name of the product short description then we need to click and drag some images then put some hunter comments and now this can be up to a thousand words and it's pretty much gonna format the full description of the product and then you can go ahead and add up to four tag categories and then you just hit post now the thing with Steam hunt is it's moderated by its community so we'll just click on one of the products here and we'll go and have a look down and have a look at the product itself we can see there's being 77 votes and there's also been 23 comments so there's obviously a lot of interest in this particular product now the product itself has actually earned a dollar 56 just on people's uploading now that's just a component of the Steam blockchain once you get an account you have the ability to up vote and it might only be for a few cents to start with but as you become more invested in the Steam blockchain your voting power increases so that's product hunt a versus Steam hunt and as I pointed out there's going to be times where a one platform will display products before the other but generally they're both up to date but the key feature with Steampunk is you can earn rewards just for posting your favorite products and the more products you post the higher your user score will be Steam hunt rewards a community for participating in the Steam hunt product discovery program and I like this little feature for CES rather than going to CS or going to your favorite blog you could just come to Steam hunt and just click on check see us hunts and this
