Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What’s the reason why women have a longer life span than men? Why has this advantage gotten larger in the past? We have only a small amount of evidence and the evidence isn’t strong enough to make a definitive conclusion. While we are aware that there are behavioral, biological and environmental factors that play an integral role in women living longer than males, it isn’t clear how much each one contributes.
In spite of the number of pounds, we know that at a minimum, the reason women live longer than men do today, but not in the past, is to relate to the fact that some significant non-biological elements have changed. These factors are changing. Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. There are other issues that are more intricate. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.
Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men

The chart above shows that the advantage of women is present everywhere, global differences are significant. In Russia women live for 10 years longer than men. In Bhutan the difference is only half a year.

The advantage for women in life expectancy was much lower in rich countries that it is today.
Let’s now look at the way that female advantages in longevity has changed with time. The next chart compares the male and female lifespans at birth in the US between 1790 and 2014. Two points stand out.
First, there’s an upward trend. Both men and women in the US are living much, much longer than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.
Second, the gap is increasing: While the female advantage in life expectancy was once tiny but it has risen significantly with time.
