Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. Why do women live so longer than men in the present and how have these advantages gotten bigger in the past? The evidence is sketchy and we only have partial solutions. While we are aware that there are behavioral, biological and environmental variables that all play a role in women living longer than men, we do not know how much each one contributes.

In countries with high incomes, the longevity advantage for women was smaller

We will now examine how the female advantage in longevity has changed over time. The next chart shows the male and female lifespans when they were born in the US from 1790 to 2014. Two areas stand out.

First, there’s an upward trend: Men as well as women in the US live a lot, much longer than they did 100 years ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

Second, the gap is growing: Although the female advantage in life expectancy was extremely small however, it has grown significantly in the past.
