Budget airline Wizz Air saw demand jump more than sixfold last month thanks to much weaker travel rules imposed by European governments.
Around 3.6 million people booked flights with the Hungarian air carrier in April, compared to 564,600 in the same period the previous year and just 78,400 in April 2020 during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.
The firm’s seat capacity also skyrocketed 355.7 per cent to around 4.3million, meaning its load factor – the proportion of seats filled by passengers – surged from 59.2 per cent in April 2021 to 83.4 per cent last month.
Demand recovery: Around 3.6m people booked flights with Wizz Air in April, compared to 564,600 in the same period last year and just 78,400 in April 2020
It means the number of passengers who have flown with the airline in the past 12 months has more than doubled year-on-year to 38million.
As well as benefiting from the loosening of international travel restrictions, the London-listed company has taken the opportunity to significantly expand its operations across Europe.
Wizz Air launched a new base at Cardiff Airport, its fourth in the UK, alongside London Luton, Gatwick and Doncaster Sheffield airports, which it predicts will increase capacity by over 330,000 seats.
Its customers can now travel from the Welsh capital to popular holiday destinations among Britons, including Lanzarote, Tenerife and Alicante, with the route to Sharm el-Sheikh due to open later in the year.
The business additionally expanded its existing routes to Romanian and Polish cities, such as Timisoara, Wroclaw and Bacau, by acquiring two daily slot pairs from Spanish low-cost airline Vueling at London Luton Airport.
This move is forecast to enhance the firm’s seat capacity by another 167,000 and maintain its position as the Bedfordshire airport’s biggest operator.

More routes originating from major European capitals were announced by the airline in April, including Rome, the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, Tirana in Albania, and Vilnius in Lithuania.
Under chief executive Joszef Varadi, Wizz Air has outlined a goal to boost its annual passenger numbers to 170 million and fleet to 500 aircraft within the next decade.
Yet while it is successfully expanding its customer reach, the Covid-19 pandemic has contributed to massive financial harm for the FTSE 250 company and the wider airline industry.
Three weeks ago, Wizz Air declared that it was anticipating a net loss of between €632million and €652million for the 2022 financial year.
Aside from temporary bans on travelling overseas in some countries, losses have been compounded by strict quarantine and vaccination requirements, and people being far more reluctant to book flights due to uncertainty over future travel rules.
Demand for air travel was also hurt over the December to January period by the mild but more transmissible Omicron variant of Covid-19 leading to the renewal of international restrictions.
However, the group said last month that it was predicting a ‘busy summer flying programme,’ with the number of available seat kilometres between July and September forecast to be 40 per cent ahead of 2019 levels.
Today’s update comes after rivals EasyJet and British Airways were hampered over the Easter getaway by a raft of flight cancellations, which were blamed on coronavirus-related staff absences and delays in processing security checks for new airline crew.
closed trading 1.3 per cent higher at £32.16 on Tuesday, although their value has plunged by over a quarter in the last three months.
